Trees + Water + Critters =

Water Canyon, Winnemucca, NV - BLM

Water Canyon, BLM is truly a treasure. It's the first place with water, trees, and fun critters to watch. There's enough altitude to keep it cool and s pleasant breeze.

The distant hills provide an endless vista of changing clouds, sky and bird 🐦 life overlooking the town of Winnemucca, NV. The town is smallish but has everything a traveler needs.

There are several truck stops with showers, laundry facilities, and a grocery outlet along with a Super Walmart. The people do live up to their reputation as belonging to the friendliest town in Nevada.

A senior center facility that is the grandest one so far, has lunch for a $4.00 donation. There will be a separate post on it. Also there is a BLM office in town as well.

Critter life is abundant. The first thing you will notice are the grasshoppers. They are multicolored, large, and plentiful. There are also black beetles, and we saw a couple of grass snakes.

The trees are mostly aspens. Glorious in their height and in the rustling of their leaves. The small creek plays a beautiful counterpoint to the breeze filled trees. There are only 10 campsites. The stay limit is limited to 3 nights per 30 days.

Cows are grazing adjacent to the BLM area. One cow somehow made it to the BLM side. The brand inspector was notified and the wayward cow was successfully reunited with her herd

The sun sets over the town. As it ducks behind the mountains, the sky becomes a watercolor pallet of yellows and oranges. They in turn reflect off of any shimmering surface, even a spiders' gossamer web.

Craggy rocks frame the highest peaks in one direction, while other's remain grass covered and smooth appearing. Either way they are beautiful to the eye. Bird life is abundant.

Our favorite is the red tailed hawk that frequents the bare branches of several local trees. Her watchful eyes scan the grassy, bush dotted floor for her next meal. Once spotted she dives down to secure her meal.

The evenings come slowly, watching the changes in light, dance across the land and sky is our only pastime. We each take way too many sunset pictures. Comparing picture after picture, differing minutae of framing and editing are all that separate our views.

Less than a favorite are the giant grasshoppers. They are very numerous and can be brown, black, grayish and are easily 2.5 inches long. They might be tasty if cooked, but Miji who loves to chase them only bit one once and afterwards catches them and spits them out. They sleep in the branches of small bushes. If one is squished in the roadway, the others gather for a feast.

The sunsets are spectacular. Each night is different depending on the cloud cover. Often the reflected colors are displayed to the east in pinks and purples.

Looking to the west, the colors before the sun disappears are mainly oranges and yellows. After sun sets the colors deepen and get very intense. The hills and mountains are silhouetted in dark shades of gray and black.
